The atlanto-occipital joint (articulation between the atlas and the occipital bone) consists of a pair of condyloid joints. The atlanto-occipital joint is a synovial joint particularly hinge joint. These joints act as a door hinge does, allowing flexion and extension in just one plane. The atlanto-occipital joint allows flexion and extension around the mediolateral axis, which give rise to the ordinary forward and backward nodding of the head.
So, the correct answer is option (a) Both statements 1 and 2 are correct.
