The Mauryan pillar capital found at Sarnath is popularly known as lion capital. It is considered very important because it is an evidence of advanced metallurgy in the Mauryan times. It shows that our civilisation was advanced even 2,500 years ago. Lion capital is one of the finest example of Mauryan sculpture. The chakra at its base appears on our national flag. The Lion capital is our emblem today. The four lions facing four directions indicate the spread of dharma.
