The repetition of sound caused by reflection of sound waves from an obstacle is known as an echo.
Following are the practical applications of echoes:
  • SONAR which stands for Sound Navigation And Ranging. It consists of a transmitter and detector. The transmitter transmits the ultrasonic sound. These waves travel through water, strike an underwater object, reflect and are detected by the detector.
  • A stethoscope is a medical instrument used for listening to sounds that originate within the body, mainly from the heart or lungs. In stethoscopes, the sound of the patient’s heartbeat reaches the doctor’s ears by multiple reflection of sound.
  • Ultrasonography
