(a) The particles of a gas have maximum kinetic energy. They move with high speed in all directions and hence completely the vessel in which they are kept.

(b) Gases exert pressure on the walls of the containing vessel because the particles of a gas have maximum kinetic energy. They are free to move randomly with high speeds in all directions. During their motion, they collide with one another and also with the walls of the container. The constant bombardment of the particles on the walls exerts a pressure.
