Expert Answer
Advantages of tidal energy:
- Tidal energy is renewable energy source.
- The energy produced is clean and non-polluting. It does not produce any green house gases or other harmful products.
- It does not require any fuel.
- Electricity is produced reliably.
Disadvantages of tidal energy:
- There are very few places around the world where tidal dams or tidal barrages can be built.
- Building a barrage across is very expensive and affects a very wide area around.
- It also affects the aquatic life adversely and can disrupt migration of fishes.
- The rise and fall of sea water during the tides is not sufficient to generate electricity on a large scale.
Advantages of wave energy:
- Wave energy is renewable energy source and is free of cost.
- It does not produce any waste products.
- It reduces our reliance on non-renewable resources.
Disadvantages of wave energy:
- The ideas are only experimental in nature. The models made based on these ideas will take many years to harness the sea wave energy on a large scale.
- It is suitable at locations only where strong waves occur.
- The equipment should be strong to stand against rough weather.
Advantages of ocean thermal energy:
- Ocean thermal energy is renewable source of energy.
- It can be used continuously for 24 hours a day throughout the year with little ongoing cost.
- It generates electricity without emission of green house gases.
Disadvantages of ocean thermal energy:
- The cost of installation of the device and maintenance of the power plant is high.
- It causes disruptions in the aquatic ecosystem.
- A constant supply of warm and cold water is required. So, the plant can be built in only suitable for tropical locations.
