The following are the powers and functions of the Vice-President of India:

  1. As the Ex-Officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Vice-President is required to regulate debates and proceedings of the House, decide the order of speeches and also determine the admissibility of resolutions and questions.
  2. He can suspend or adjourn the Rajya Sabhain case of grave disorder.
  3. He also issues directions to the Chairpersons of House Committees on matters relating to their functioning.
  4. The Vice-President takes over the President’s office in following instances:
    1. Death of the President.
    2. Resignation of the President.
    3. Removal of the President.
    4. The President is unable to discharge his duties due to absence, illness or any other reason.
  5. In case of the President’s death in office, resignation or removal, the Vice-President takes over until a new President is elected and enters upon his office.
