The city of Shahjahanabad was built by Shahjahan. The palace complex was located within the Red Fort. To the west of the Red Fort was the walled city of Delhi with 14 gates. Chandni Chowk and Faiz Bazar were main markets of the city. A canal ran down the centre of Chandni Chowk. In the city, there were crowded localities popularly known as mohallas. Jama Masjid was the largest and grandest mosque in the city.

Shahjahanabad was an important centre of Sufi culture during Shajahan’s time. The city housed several dargahs, khanqahs and idgahs. Open squares, streets and several water channels were prominent features of the city.
