Gaps are left in between rails while laying a railway track.Why?

Expert Answer
Rail track will expand due to thermal expansion along the length side. Hence some gap is provided in the joints to account this thermal expansion.
If sufficient gap is not provided, then stress will be developed in the joints and tracks will bend in undesirable way.
