The baking powder is the mixture of baking soda(sodium hydrogencarbonate) and an acid like tataric acid or citric acid .The role an acid in the baking powder is neutralisation of effect of sodiumcarbonate. If the acid is not present the cake will taste bitter.2NaHCO3  = Na2CO3  +H2O + CO2
