Expert Answer
Let P1 and P3 are cross polaroids. P2 is the another polariser that is placed in between P1 and P3 and is rotated.
Let I0 be the intensity of polaroid light after passing through first polaraiser P1.
Then the intensity of light passing through second polariser P2 will be
I = I0cos2θ
where θ is the angle between pass axes of P1 and P2.
Since P1 and P3 are crossed and the angle between the pass axes of P2 and P3 will be [ ( π/2 )- θ ] .
Hence intensity of light emerging from P3 will be
I = I0 cos2θ cos2[( π/2 )- θ ] = I0 cos2θ sin2θ = (I0/4)sin22θ
therefore the transmitted intensity will be maximum when θ = π/4
