Explain why the net charge in the interior of a conductor is zero and any excess charge given to the conductor resides at its surface only.

Expert Answer
Consider a conductor carrying an excess charge q in electrostatic condition. Choose a Gaussian surface inside the conductor just inside the conductor near its outer boundary. As the electric field = 0 inside the conductor, the flux through the Gaussian surface must be zero.
Hence, there is no charge inside the interior of the conductor, because the Gaussian surface lies just near the outer boundary. So, any excess charge given to conductor must reside at the surface of the conductor.
