Magnesium nitride reacts with water to produce magnesium hydroxide and ammonia gas, like do many metal nitrides.

Nitrogen get combined with hydrogen from water molecules to form ammoina gas.

The balanced reacion is as follows:
 
Mg3N2(s) + 6H2O(l) → 3Mg(OH)2(aq) + 2NH3(g)
