Hi Nisha,

The steroid hormone responsible for combating fight or flight situation in the body is adrenaline or stress hormone. When excited or in anger, the adrenal medulla produces a lot of adrenaline. The gland is stimulated by the nerve ending of the autonomic nervous system.

Different parts of the body react differently in response to adrenaline.

Response to Adrenaline

Body Part

Effects of Adrenaline

Biological Advantage

Effect or Sensation

Beats faster and blood pressure increases

Sends more glucose and oxygen to the muscles

Thumping heart

Breathing centre of the brain

Faster and deeper breathing

Increased oxygenation of the blood and rapid removal of CO2

Muscles of the body

Tenses muscles

Ready for immediate action

Tense feeling, shivering

Conversion of glycogen to glucose

Glucose available in blood for energy production

No sensation

Adrenaline also causes dilation of the pupil of the eyes, stimulates uterine contraction during delivery and increases the clotting capacity of blood.
