Oersted's experiment involved tracing the direction of magnetic field produced by a current carrying conductor using a magnetic compass.
IF we keep a magnetic compass in a plane perpendicular to the radial distance from a current carrying wire, the compass needle will align itself in the direction of magnetic field produced. Thus we can trace the magnetic field lines
