6th century BCE occupies an important place in the history of India as this period saw the emergence Buddhism and the spread of Jainism. The caste system and rituals prevalent in Hinduism were denied.
Literary sources
Angas: The Jain scriptures are commonly known as ‘Aagamas’. ‘Aacharang sutra’ deals with code of conduct which a Jain is required to follow. Another Anga is ‘Bhagavati Sutra’ discusses the Jain doctrines in detail. Angas and Upaganas are important literary sources of the Jainism.
Triptikas: Triptikas are important literary works of the Buddhists. While the ‘Vinaya Pitaka’ deals with rules and regulations of the Buddha monks, the ‘Sutta Pitaka’ contains the discourses of Buddha. The ‘Abhidhamma Pitaka’ throw light on the Buddhist philosophy.
The Jataka tales are another important source of the 6th century BCE which deals with the pervious births of Lord Buddha in both-human and animal form.
