Functioning of Six’s maximum and minimum thermometer:

  1. The instrument consists of a U-shaped glass tube.
  2. It has a spherical bulb at one end and a cylindrical bulb bent downwards at the other end.
  3. Mercury and alcohol are used in the thermometer.
  4. These liquids expand on heating and contract on cooling.
  5. The lower part is filled with mercury and the upper part is filled with alcohol.
  6. The tubes are graduated.
  7. There are two indicators, the lower ends of which give the reading.
  8. A magnet is used for adjustments.
