  1. A solstice is a day when the afternoon Sun shines vertically over a Tropic (Cancer or Capricorn) and the day is the longest in that hemisphere.
  2. On 22nd December, the rays of the Sun fall directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. This is the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere (as it is summer here) while in the Northern Hemisphere, it is the shortest day (as it is winter here). This is known as winter solstice.
