Explain the following: Bioaccumulation Biomagnification Microscopic pollution

  1. Bioaccumulation: When the concentration of a substance increases in the bodies of organisms due to the absorption of food from the environment, the process of bioaccumulation takes place.

  2. Biomagnification: When quantities of harmful substances like pesticides and insecticides increase in the food chain of marine and aquatic organisms which are in turn consumed by other living beings, it is known as the process of biomagnification.

  3. Microscopic pollution: When large visible bodies called ‘floatables’ pollute the water, it is known as microscopic pollution. For example, food particles and paper.
