Four features of roads in Vijayanagara are:
- The Vijayanagara fort was entered through well-guarded gates, which linked the city to the major roads.
- Roads have been identified by historians with the help of tracing paths through gateways, as well as by finds of pavements.
- In Vijayanagara roads were built in the valleys which generally were not built in rocky terrain.
- Some of the most important roads in the empire extended from temple gateways, and were lined by bazaars.
