Beginning as a fur trading post in the 17^th century, many repair workshops were established at Detroit by the early 19^th century. Later, an industry for manufacturing boat engines was established here. Soon, Detroit became a centre of copper and iron and steel manufacturing companies. By the end of the 19^th century, Detroit had developed a very sophisticated machine building industry which made it a suitable location for developing the automobile industry.
