France was defeated in the Franco-Prussian War and as a result, the German language was imposed on the French districts of Alsace and Lorraine. On the day of the last lesson of Mr Hamel, the atmosphere in his class was different from the usual days. It was the last lesson in French as German was going to be imposed on the students from the following day. Not only the students, but also the village elders had gathered in the school. The atmosphere in the whole school was strange and silent, and Mr Hamel spoke in a grave tone paying tribute to the French language.
