Explain that lead nitrate on heating gives a pale yellow gas which on strong heating turns dark brown.

Expert Answer
Lead nitrate on heating gives dinitrogen tetraoxide, N2O4, which is pale yellow gas. But on heating N2O4 decomposes into NO2 which is dark brown in colour.
2Pb(NO3)2 → 2PbO+4NO2+O2
