Explain size of trivalent lanthanoid cation decreases with increase in atomic number

Answer:

Size of trivalent lanthanoid cation decreases with increase in atomic number because the differentiating electron enter is added in the inner 4f orbital. The sheilding of one 4f electron by another from the increasing nuclear charge is very much imperfect due to peculiar shape of 4forbitals.
