Osmosis: Osmosis is the passage of solvent molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane until equilibrium is reached.

Imbibition: Imbibition is the phenomenon of adsorption of water or any other liquid by solid particles of a substance without forming a solution.

Active transport: The process of transport of materials across the biological membrane with the help of a mobile carrier protein involving expenditure of energy in the form of ATP is called active transport.

Differences between osmosis, imbibition and active transport:

Osmosis

Imbibition

Active transport

  • A semipermeable membrane is required for the transport of molecules.
  • A semipermeable membrane is not required for the transport of molecules.
  • A semipermeable membrane is not required for the transport of molecules.
  • Heat is not produced during the process.
  • Heat is produced during the process.
  • Heat is produced during the process.
  • It develops comparatively lower pressure called osmotic pressure.
  • It develops comparatively higher pressure called imbibition pressure.
  • It involves transport of molecules against pressure using carrier proteins.
  • It does not require energy in the form of ATP.
  • It does not require energy in the form of ATP.
  • It requires energy in the form of ATP.
  • Example: Absorption of water by plants
  • Example: Swelling of dry seeds when placed in water.
  • Example: Uptake of mineral ions by the roots of plants
