The regions experiencing the Mediterranean type of climate experience light rainfall during the winter months. The trees and plants are able to survive the hot and dry summers in the following ways:

  1. Some trees like the cork oak have thick spongy bars in order to prevent excessive loss of moisture from the plants.
  2. Some plants have long roots which go deep into the soil in search of water.
  3. Many plants have small leathery leaves to reduce the rate of transpiration.
  4. Some trees like the olive tree have waxy leaves to prevent water loss.
