In the late nineteenth century, several Bengali bureaucrats began to wear Western style clothes while in office and changed into much comfortable Indian clothes at home. The British anthropologist Verrier Elwin writes that policemen in Poona who were going off duty would often remove their trousers in the street itself and walk home in their tunic and undergarments.
