Expert Answer
Four ways in which soil erosion can be prevented:
- Afforestation: Since the roots of the trees hold the soil together, plantation of trees and other vegetation on bare lands would result in the conservation of soil.
- Terrace farming: This kind of farming includes the cutting of the slopes of hills into steps and making large flat fields, to prevent soil erosion by running water.
- Shelter Belt: When trees are planted in a straight line to prevent soil erosion, it is called shelter belt. These shelter belts stabalise sand dunes and prevent soil from wind erosion.
- Strip Cropping: In order to prevent the loss of soil due to the action of winds, large fields are divided into strips. Grass or crops are then allowed to grow in between the strips. This is called strip cropping. This method breaks the force of the wind.
