According to the doppler effect, whenever there is a relative motion between the source of light and observer, the apparent frequency of light recieved by the observer is different from the original frequency of light emiited actually from the source of light.
The apparent frequency of light increases when the distance between the light source and the observer decreases. Thus, the apparent wavelength decreases and is called blue shift.
Whereas, the apaarent frequency of light decreases when the distance between the source light and the observer increases. Thus, the apparent wavelength increases and is called red shift.
