The following are three important ways in which newspapers played a significant role in developing a strong national sentiment among the Indians:

  1. The Press helped in spreading the message of patriotism and modern liberal ideals of liberty, freedom, equality, home rule and independence.
  2. The Press didn’t mince words in criticising the British government and exposed the true nature of British rule in India.
  3. It enabled the vast Indian population, spread across different regions and linguistic terrains, to exchange views, be in contact and organise joint political movements.
