Following are three important reasons behind the acceptance of the Mountbatten Plan:
- The gruesome communal violence that had engulfed the country at that point of time had convinced the political leadership that partition was inevitable. Not accepting it would amount to even more hatred and sectarian violence.
- The Muslim League refused to cooperate with the Congress in governance. The experience convinced the Congress that it was fruitless to expect smooth functioning in the future.
- The only alternative to partition was a Federation with a weak centre. A smaller India with a strong central authority was seen as a better option than a bigger State with a weak government at the centre.
