The Fundamental Duties were added to the Constitution by the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976 and inserted in the Part IV of the Constitution.

The following are five important Fundamental Duties of the citizens of India:

  1. Abiding by the Constitution and respecting its ideals, its institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem.
  2. Cherishing and following the noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for freedom from the British rule.
  3. Upholding and protecting the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country.
  4. Defending the country and rendering national service when called upon to do so.
  5. Promoting harmony and a spirit of common brotherhood amongst the people of India irrespective of their religious, linguistic and regional or sectional backgrounds and renouncing practices derogatory to the dignity of women.
