Heat energy absorbed by a material of mass m is m×Cp×ΔT Joules.
Where Cp is the specific heat of the material and ΔT is the rise in temperature.

Specific heat of water = 4.2 J/g, Specific heat of mercury = 0.14 J/g

Since same amount of heat is given to equal mass of water and mercury, increase of temperature is greater for mercury than water.

Increase in temperature for mercury is 30 times than that of water, because the ratio of specific heat of water to that of mercury is 30 times.
