Both the World Wars had a huge influence on the women’s clothing. The changes which came about were
1. Women in Europe stopped wearing jewellery and extremely expensive clothes. Women across all classes, more or less, began to dress in similar ways. This resulted into breaking of social barriers.
2. As large number of women was employed in ammunition factories, they began to wear uniform of blouse and trousers with scarves. Later, the uniform was replaced by khadi dress and a cap. Clothes, thus, became plain and simple.
3. Trousers became an essential part of women’s dressing. This gave them great freedom of movement.
4. Skirts became shorter as women stepped out of their homes to work.
5. When courses such as gymnastics were introduced as a part of curriculum in schools, girls and women began to dress themselves in comfortable clothes which did not restrict their movement.
6. Working women now began to step out of their homes in convenient and comfortable clothes.
