Contemporary philosophers like Voltaire, Rousseau and Montesquieu played a pivotal role in the outbreak and sustenance of the French Revolution. Though the Third Estate was severely underprivileged, it needed to articulate its grievances before acting on them. The Philosophers, through their writings, undertook this task and provided the social push which was required for the underprivileged to break the shackles and wage a rebellion against the nobility and the clergy. The philosophers inspired the middle class with their writings on ideas of liberty, equality and fraternity which went on to become the slogans of the French Revolution.
