Raja Rammohan Roy was well versed in Sanskrit, Persian and several other Indian and European languages. By using his language skills, he studied the ancient texts and brought to the notice of the Indian public that the tradition of sati did not have any sanction in the ancient texts. By the early nineteenth century, many British officials were also becoming increasingly critical of Indian traditions and customs which seemed archaic to the western mind. As a result, Raja Rammohan Roy’s constant campaigning against the practice of sati came to fruition and it was finally banned in 1829.
