The bar magnet can pick up the most metal objects. The electromagnet can pick up iron fillings only.

The bar magnet has a permanent magnetic field. Electro magnets donot generate permanent magnetic fields.

In bar magnets the magnetic field is almost constant while in electromagnets the magnetic field decays and stops when the electro magnet is turned off.

Magentic field can be varied in electromagnets by changing the winding or current. We donot have this flexibilty in case of bar magnets.

A bar magnet is solid state like the magnets kids play with and are always magnetic.
