Let ωm be the frequency of modulating signal and ωc be the frequency of carrier wave.The plot of variation of amplitude ω for an amplitude modulated wave is given below:
Modulation index:- It is defined as the ratio of amplitude of modulating signal to the amplitude of carrier wave. Mathematically it can be written as
where A m is the amplitude of modulating signal and A c amplitude of carrier wave.
The quality of the transmitted signal is determined by the index of modulation .
The variation in the carrier amplitude Ac is small for a small modulation index and vice-versa.
Hence, for effective modulation, the value of should be checked and it should be ensured that the modulation index is never greater than unity.
