The ratio of amplitude of modulating signal to the amplitude is carrier signal is called modulation index.
i.e., begin mathsize 12px style straight mu space equals space straight A subscript straight m over Ac end style
Modulations index is important as it should not be greater than 1 to avoid distortion.
