ICSE Class 10 Answered
Distinguish between sodium sulphite and sodium sulphate using barium chloride solution ?

Expert Answer
Both sodium sulphite and sodium sulphate react with barium chloride solution to give white insoluble barium sulphite and barium sulphate respectively.
BaCl2(aq) + Na2SO3(aq) → BaSO3(aq) + 2NaCl(aq)
BaCl2(aq) + Na2SO4(aq) → BaSO4(aq) + 2NaCl(aq)
As these two products have a similar appearance, barium chloride is not an appropriate solution to distinguish between sodium sulphite and sodium sulphate.
Instead of barium chloride, acidified potassium permanganate is used to distinguish sodium sulphite and sodium sulphate.
