Four types of winds:

Planetary winds: Blow from high pressure belts to low pressure belts constantly throughout the year in the same direction. Examples: Trade winds, Westerlies, polar winds
Periodic winds: Winds which change their direction periodically. Examples: Monsoon winds, land and sea breezes
Local winds: Blow over small areas for a short time. Examples: Chinook, loo, harmattan, katabatic winds
Variable winds: Blow for a short duration and change their speed and direction frequently. Examples: Cyclones, anticyclones
