In the process of weathering, climatic conditions play an important role.

  1. Equatorial Regions: Equatorial climatic regions are hot and wet. Due to high temperature and humidity, chemical weathering is more common.
  2. Tropical regions:In tropical regions, there is a marked dry and wet season. High temperature increases the rate of evaporation. During the wet season, oxides of iron and aluminum are precipitated from the rocks. This results in the formation of laterite soils.
  3. In the regions of dry climatelike in deserts, physical or mechanical weathering is common as the temperatures in these regions is extremely high during the day time and drops down considerably in the nights.

  4. In temperate and mid latitude regions, frost action and chemical weathering takes place in areas which have a concentration of limestone rocks.

  5. In Polar Regions, where temperatures are extremely low, frost action is the common form of weathering. Recent reports have also suggested that since melting water in these regions contains quantities of carbonic acid, chemical weathering is also experienced in the Polar Regions.
