Difference between scalar and vector quantity and how to identify the two?

Scalar quantities are those quantities which need only magnitude for its description. Value of scaler quantity  can only be positive. 
Vector quantities are those quantities which need magnitude as well as direction for its description.  Value of vector quantity can be positive as well as negative. 
If any physical quantity is written in vector form then you will come to know about it. Or you have to remember because sometime vector quantity can be written in magnitude form
