Diamond is indeed the hardest substance, however, it does not mean that it is also the toughest.
It breaks down because it is brittle.
Hardness is the ability of a substance to resist scratch and dents on its surface.
Whereas, brittleness is the tendency of a substance to break down into pieces after exceeding the permissible limits of absorbable energy.
