Describe the Chipko movement.

The Chipko movement was started in Garhwal region of present Uttarakhand in 1970s. Women and men in this region came together to protest against the indiscriminate felling of trees by the contractors. They were opposed to the use of forests for commercial gains. During this movement villagers embraced the trees and thus formed circle around trees to prevent cutting of trees. Gradually, the protest turned into a movement. The government imposed a 15 year ban on felling green trees in the Himalayan forests.
