Raj Ram Mohan Roy considered the spread of Western education an important factor if India was to witness a dawn of modern and progressive ideas. He was hopeful that such as intellectual awakening would foster social change in the Indian society. In pursuance of this thinking, he also helped in the founding of the Presidency College in Calcutta and the Vedanta College.
