Properties of carbon nanotube:
 
1) Tensile and compressive strength: They have large tensile strength as compared to many materials including steel. However, under excessive tensile strain, nanotubes show permanent fatigue. Their compressive strength is very low.
 
2) Hardness: The hardness of nanotubes is about 25 × 109 Pa. Its bulk modulus is higher than that of the diamond. The C60 fullerenes in the crystalline form prepared under high pressure and temperature conditions have great mechanical properties, so they are named as Ultrahard Fullerites.
 
3) Electrical properties: Metallic nanotubes can carry a current up to 109 A per cm2 of cross-section. This current is approximately 1000 times more than copper. Multi-Walled Nanotube show superconductivity up to a temperature of 12 K.
 
4) Thermal properties: Carbon nanotubes have high thermal conductivity along their length. SWNT has a thermal conductivity of 3500 W/m K while copper has 385 W/m K. However, along the axis of the tube, nanotubes are good insulators.
