Describe a magnetic compass.

A compass is an instrument used to find directions.
It has a thin magnetic needle kept in a brass box which has a glass top.
The magnetic needle is pivoted at its centre so that it can rotate freely about its centre.
The needle points in the north-south direction and the end of the needle which indicates north pole is painted in red colour.
