Let us consider two objects of same masses but different velocity moving in a particular direction. When these objects are brought to stop, the object with higher velocity will require more force to stop as compared to the other object. On the other hand, we consider two moving objects of same velocity but different masses. When these objects are brought to stop, the object with greater mass will require more force to stop as compared to the other object with lesser mass. This shows that the force needed to stop an object in a particular time depends both on the product of mass and velocity of the moving object. This product is nothing but the linear momentum.

Thus, linear momentum of a body is defined as the product of its mass and linear velocity.
If m is the mass of the body and v is the velocity, then Linear momentum, p = mv.
