Noun Clause : A Subordinate Clause which performs the function of a noun in a sentence is called a Subordinate Noun Clause.

It will answer the question ‘What?’

I know what is wrong with this sentence. (What do I know?)

I have seen the painting that she painted. (Seen what?)

Adjective Clause: A Subordinate Clause which performs the function of an adjective in a sentence is called a Subordinate Adjective Clause.

It will answer the question ‘Which?’

The man who is standing next to my mother is my uncle. (Which man?)

The house which is known to be haunted is at the end of the road. (Which house?)

Adverb Clause: A Subordinate Clause which performs the function of an adverb in a sentence is called a Subordinate Adverb Clause.

It will answer the question ‘How?’, ‘Why?’, ‘When?’, ‘Where?’

Speaking only when I ask you to speak. (Speak when?)

I didn’t speak to her because she is my enemy. (Why didn’t I speak?)

Conditional Clauses or If Clauses are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled.

If the police had acted on time, this situation will have been averted.
