CBSE Class 11-science Answered
deferentiate between stress and strain

Expert Answer
Stress = Force / Area ; it is defined as applied force per unit area
Strain = change in length / Initial length
when a mass of m kg is suspended using a metallic wire or thin rod, elongation along the direction of length is taking place.
If A is the area of cross section of wire or thin rod, then stress is (m×g)/A. Unit of stress is N/m2 .
If the length of wile is L and is elongated to a length L+dL due to the applied force, then strain dL/L .
